The Story Behind Sugar Grounds

Lydia grew up in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where she spent six years working in a local bakery. That experience taught her the craft of baking, the value of quality ingredients, and the joy of serving people well.

In 2018, a mission trip to Puerto Rico changed everything. What started as a week of disaster relief work became the beginning of something unexpected: meeting Conrad.

Two years later, Lydia and Conrad were married and made the move to Middlefield — Conrad's hometown. Around the same time, Conrad was building his own business, Premier Floors. Together, they began dreaming about something new.

In 2022, they purchased this corner property with a vision: to create a space centered around good food, great coffee, and genuine community.

What was supposed to take one year took four. But every delay, every renovation, and every long night only made the vision stronger.

Today, Sugar Grounds Cafe is built on that journey.

We care about doing things the right way: fresh donuts made every morning, organic coffee beans, small-batch organic syrups, real butter on the grill, fries and tater tots cooked in beef tallow, and as many ingredients as possible made in-house or sourced locally.

This is not just a cafe to us. It is something built with care, patience, and a whole lot of heart.
